American small businesses generate the third largest economy in the world with about 50 percent of all small business spending directed to business services (Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates)

That segment is growing. The SBA estimates that an average of 800,000 small businesses are newly formed every year; Cahners research estimates there are more than 10 million small businesses of less than 99 employees in the United States today. 2.3 million are small businesses and 8.1 million are Small Office / Home Offices (SOHOs). And even though Internet business has temporarily lost a bit of luster, the share of small firms with access to the Internet nearly doubled from 21.5% in 1996 to 41.2% in 1998. IDC estimates that 60% of small business has Internet access today. Only 1.4% of Internet use among small firms is directed towards e-commerce as of 1999. By 2002 it is expected that almost one-third of all business-to-business will be via e-commerce. (SBA: E-Commerce: Small Business Ventures Online)

According to a new report, "Business Trade & Technology Strategies" from Forrester Research, the total value of goods and services traded between companies over the Internet will reach USD327 billion in the year 2002. The rapid growth of inter-company commerce will cause businesses to adopt dynamic trading processes. Total Internet business-to-business trade will reach USD8 billion this year, a 1000 percent rise from 1996. Industry sectors including utilities, transportation, and services will make up USD3billion of fourth channel trade this year.
